Groupthink, Conformity and Social Groups
Here’s a collection of some social psychology concepts I find interesting. I’ll let these clinical definitions speak for me. A social group is a collection of people who interact with each other and share similar characteristics and a sense of unity. A social category is a collection of people who do not interact but who share similar characteristics. For example, women, men, the...

I had an epiphany after years of idealizing a perfect HCI (human computer interaction) experience. Whether it be sitting back with a wireless keyboard in an ez chair with a huge flat screen, or laying down with the screen facing down from the ceiling and key on my lap. Perfect ergonomics, with an extremely smooth path from mind to input. Then I realized this ideal of mine if effortless...

Nothing is something
In my quest for a ideal existence I sometimes need to be reminded of this simple thought: Doing nothing is ok. You don’t have to go anywhere, or do anything You don’t need to enroll in a workshop to go do nothing You don’t need to buy tickets to a festival, and wait all year, to go do nothing You don’t have to fly to India, find a guru to do nothing You don’t have...

get rid of 'other' cruft in iphone, and remove...
For me this time it was a bunch of voice memos that had been backed up ages ago, but somehow kept being copied in …. MacFUSE iPhone Disk now unsupported for lion btw. Look around with grand perspective or some file visualizer, ssh in and copy over the /Volumes/iPhoneDisk/Recordings contents as backup. I needed to delete that directory (I think). Then sync and ‘other’ was back...

comment blocks in vim
This is for block editing in general, actually. Mark the area which is to be commented using the blockwise visual mode (CTRL-V). Press I (capital i) and write the text you want to prepend to each line of the selected block, e.g. # Critical part: Then press ESC and the text will be inserted to the left of each line of the selected block. from:...

nail biter
This is different than being addicted to not being addicted to things. I’ve finally broken free of that by just drinking coffee and caffeine whenever I feel like it. I just found myself using my leatherman pliers to untied some double-knotted laces. This is yet-again another reminder I have a problem. While I’m at it other things that are harder than they should be: opening cans of...
